What is courage to summit?

About the Challenge

When outdoorsman and avid mountain climber Dale Simpson approached Plants for Purpose with the idea of climbing 21 mountains in 21 days to raise funds for men's mental health, we couldn’t say “yes” fast enough.

As Dale climbs 21 mountains in 21 days toward a better future for men's mental health, we’ll be cheering him on and supporting him, and we’re calling on you to join us.

Help Contribute to the Cause:

There are several ways in which you can contribute and make a difference. You can help spread the word about Dale’s journey by talking, texting or emailing with others; sharing it on social media, donating funds to support our GoFundMe Campaign in support of Plants for a Purpose; or donating an item or service to be included in our auction. You can even advocate for your workplace to become a corporate sponsor!

Every action, big or small, plays a significant role in supporting our cause and nurturing the potential for positive impacts in the lives of men struggling with mental health challenges.

Join us today and be a part of the change! Together, we can make a difference.

WHY COURAGE?

Empowered to Thrive

Did you know that Males account for over 75 percent of suicides in Canada, which amounts to an average of 50 men per week who die by suicide? Men are taught from a young age that showing emotion is a weakness; at Plants for a Purpose, we know that showing emotion is a strength.

We also understand the struggles of feeling alone and how easy it can be to turn to harmful coping mechanisms and even contemplate suicide when we don’t have the support we need to thrive. No one should ever suffer in silence. That’s why Courage to Summit was created: to provide a community where men who are struggling with their mental health can feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.

As a growing not-for-profit organization, Plants for a Purpose is committed to using our voice to drive change. That’s why we are thrilled to present Courage to Summit, a men's mental health initiative in partnership with Dale Simpson.

Committee

We went to work recruiting the top community leaders who have a passion for supporting men in their communities. This committee reflects many interests, communities and cultures. Together our combined knowledge and wisdom provides the perfect team to create programs to help support our brothers.

Measurable Outcomes

  • Establish a local peer support community for men, providing a safe space for them to connect with like-minded individuals, receive valuable support, and find the resilience to overcome life's challenges.
  • Fund and deliver men’s wellness programming in partnership with Hollow Bone Healing Lodge through land-based teachings & traditional practices. This will include enriching outdoor retreats featuring inspiring guest speakers, meaningful ceremonies, and opportunities for connection, bonding and healing together.
  • We have calculated that for every $200 donated, we can fully cover the cost for one more person to join. Please contact info@plantsforapurpose.ca to be added to our email list to be notified when applications open.

If you are in crisis and require assistance, please call The Calgary Distress Centre at (403) 266-4357. Or if you or someone you know is thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8 within Canada - any time, any day.

climbing 21 mountains in 21 days

MESSAGE FROM DALE SIMPSON

O

"The 21x21 Challenge is designed to raise awareness and funds that will help bring struggling men in our community back from the darkness of loneliness through connection and identification. We aim to show that it is possible and that there is hope, and that you or someone you love is not alone.

I am certain that the mountains in our lives can be overcome in the same way that the mountains in our naturally beautiful backyard can be conquered. To symbolically summit a mountain every day for 21 days is not an easy task. One might say impossible. But I believe anything is possible if you have enough courage. And I’m up for the task of proving it.

Seeing documentaries/stories of other great men achieving incredible physical accomplishments through adversity and endurance across adventure races or endurance challenges has somewhat stirred in me a curiosity. A wonder as to the limits of my own mind and body. Driven by a love for the outdoors, a spiritual connection in the mountains and a desire to achieve great things with others through altruistic movement; this test of stamina makes total sense to me.

The 21 mountains will be my challenge in hopes each new summit will bring inspiration and help to others. Help to those struggling with mental health issues and the added burdens they bring to the already difficult everyday world we all navigate. We are with you and for you. If yourself, or a loved one is struggling, then I am here to say you are not alone." - Dale Simpson, July 2024

At forty years old now, I am a recovered alcoholic managing to live a healthy, active life that I love, despite the very real effects of diagnosed depression, anxiety, and a swath of other mental health struggles due to trauma, physical/emotional abuse, and of course loneliness. Dealing with these struggles has, at times, led me to some very dark emotional places. Overcoming these burdens has not been easy and certainly did not happen quickly or on my own accord or power alone.

I am the sole parent to two incredibly amazing teenagers who have had to live with and overcome many similar struggles of their own. We have lived in Calgary for six years now after moving from British  following a tragedy that would change our lives forever. Having gone through many of the mental health and addiction counseling systems in our region, I have encountered many things that have helped, and many more that seemed to be of no help whatsoever. However, I believe that the biggest relief or change-making puzzle piece came from something we call identification and connection. Until I was personally connected with other seemingly recovered men who truly understood my struggles, the internal pain seemed to persist. For me, that was leading to a place in my mind where it made sense for me to simply not exist at all. I truly believe that until I was connected with these solid, altruistic men, no true progress could be made in the direction of lasting recovery. They showed me that learning how to get connected spiritually to something and becoming a part of a system that thrives on altruism was a tangible, workable solution. It allowed me the ability to pick up the pieces of my life and construct meaning from my journey.

Today, one of the ways I get connected spiritually is through a connection with the outdoors, and I believe the meaning of my journey is to help others through identification and connection. I mentor many men in our community with similar struggles to mine and am confident I can make a difference, not only through mentorship and awareness, but also through educating our community to an understanding of the symptoms and how to find, then utilize effective solutions. I aim to show in a profound way that there is hope and that there is substantial help.

In 2002, my journey into the world of martial arts began with a trip to Japan that lasted over 11 years. There, I trained with world-class coaches and learned from high-level professional athletes. Achieving accolades in kickboxing, full-contact karate, and arm wrestling, I became a Hokkaido Full-Contact Karate Heavyweight Champion and the All Japan Heavyweight Arm Wrestling Champion. I also earned black belts in full-contact karate and judo, certified by established organizations in Japan.

Returning to Canada in 2013, I established myself as a top personal trainer and coach in Calgary. I mentored MMA fighters, athletes, and powerlifters, securing national titles, championship belts, and medal finishes. Representing Team Canada, I won two gold medals and set over 15 national records at the 100% Raw Worlds competition.

In April 2021, my lifelong dream of owning and running my own gym became a reality with the opening of MUTEKI STRONG ACADEMY. The name "MUTEKI," meaning invincible, reflects the vision of the academy. I am grateful for my accomplishments and excited to continue sharing my knowledge and skills with future athletes worldwide.

In addition to my personal achievements, I am deeply honored to be part of the COURAGE TO SUMMIT challenge, working alongside Dale Simpson to help him achieve the seemingly impossible. This challenge not only pushes the boundaries of physical and mental endurance but also serves as a platform to inspire and motivate other men to push their own limits and achieve their goals.

Being part of this journey with Dale, witnessing his unwavering determination and resilience, has been truly humbling. The COURAGE TO SUMMIT challenge symbolizes the power of the human spirit and the ability to conquer any obstacle with perseverance and the right mindset. It is a privilege to be able to contribute my expertise and support to this incredible endeavor.

Through this challenge, we aim to inspire others to step out of their comfort zones, embrace the unknown, and embrace their own potential. By sharing our experiences, struggles, and triumphs, we hope to ignite a fire within others to pursue their dreams fearlessly and relentlessly. Together, we can create a community of individuals who believe in their own strength, who dare to dream big, and who have the courage to summit any mountain they encounter in life.

My journey from the military to entrepreneurship has been one of growth, resilience, and service. During my time in the armed forces, I learned firsthand the importance of physical and mental health and the challenges of breaking down the stigma surrounding men's issues. This experience fueled my passion for advocating for wellness and supporting my fellow comrades through their transitions.

After leaving the combat arms, I found myself in Calgary, where I discovered a new sense of purpose working with the Transition Center. Here, I dedicated myself to assisting ill and injured military members as they made the challenging journey back into civilian life. Through group programs like Helmets to Hard Hats, I have strived to work collaboratively with others to empower veterans in their transition process.

Catalyzing my creative side and passion for cultural exploration, I embarked on global journeys. Immersing myself in diverse cultures and landscapes, I found inspiration that nurtured my artistic spirit. Whether through photography, painting, or design, I used art as a means of expression and profound healing, finding solace and purpose in the act of creation.

Harnessing my artistic talents and entrepreneurial spirit, I took the leap and founded a print shop. This venture started as a business, before developing into a platform for creative expression and community building. Collaborating with fellow artists and craftsmen, we fostered an environment that celebrated individuality and innovation. Through bespoke designs and custom printing services, I synergized my passion for art with a commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

My journey from the battlefield to the print shop has taught me the profound interconnectedness between service and creativity. Today, I continue to advocate for health and wellness, support transitioning military members, and pursue my passion for artistic expression. I believe that my story is a testament to the resilience and potential for growth human beings are capable of. As well as the significance of seeking purpose beyond military service.

I began my mental health journey at age thirteen, facing numerous challenges despite various hospital stays and interactions with professionals. These experiences, rather than providing relief, often intensified feelings of isolation and distress. In search of solace, I turned to self-medication, which only temporarily alleviated my issues.

My turning point came when I connected with a community that valued spirituality, fitness, and mutual support. Adopting these principles led to holistic recovery and a shift towards altruism and service, bringing a deep sense of fulfillment and purpose. Now, I am committed to facilitating this healing process for others. By collaborating with community leaders and mentors, I am dedicated to guiding men in need towards stability and support. Together, we strive to empower and uplift.
